While new hardware releases are not unheard of at WWDC, Apple has not updated any MacBook model at this event since 2017. However it is rumored that new 14 and 16 inch MacBook Pro models will be announced at WWDC21. It is also possible that an M1X chip may be used in a new Mac Mini model.

The new M2 chip is expected to increase the core count to 10, with two being high efficiency cores. They are also expected to support an increase in connectivity and RAM capacity up to 64GB.
These devices are expected to outperform previous models despite the change to custom in-house silicon. If Apple pulls out better performance with the increase in ports and connectivity, we will likely since Mac Pros with custom silicon next year. With Apple silicon and custom Apple software such as Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro, a device could be tuned and require less intensive hardware to complete the same task in the same amount of time.
