We received a JMGO Explorer portable projector. So, we tried it out and today we are bringing you our review.
Initial Impressions
Opening the packaging brought a premium feeling. The projector inside is about the size of a Yeti Rambler 36oz. This made us skeptical, especially with the claims of up to a 150" projection size. But otherwise the 720p display, built-in operating showed for themself.
Using
Initial setup is amazingly easy. Plug in and let the battery charge for about 3 hours before first use. After waiting this period, simply plug in the remote's USB adapter to the projector and press the power button. Your remote acts as a mouse/pointer and can be used like a general smart TV off the bat, just connect to the internet and download Hulu or Amazon Prime Video from the included app store.
Of course, just turning it on was not enough for our review. We watched movies, took it around with us for couple and put it to the test.
Impressions
Battery life was great, it held up to the 2 hours battery life with ease. Movies were also great, anywhere from a flat wall to our ceiling. The first movie we watched was the Prince of Egypt on the ceiling. Since this was on of the movies that we had watched many times, we were able to lay down and see if we noticed anything out of the ordinary with the picture quality. We didn't, the autofocus worked amazingly well and the speakers were good.
After watching a few movies (and some Hell's Kitchen). Our college student worker took the projector around campus. There he setup on a common desk against a wall (alone due to current restrictions) and connected the projector to his laptop. BOOM, a portable monitor that would fit in a small backpack. His computer science assignment was done in no time. No more switching between tabs and desktops.
Our Gripe
Keystones. For those who are unaware keystones are the angled edges that appear on a project image when the projector is not perpendicular to the surface. However, there is a correction utility within the setting menu. Be sure to check out JMGO 's Youtube video here.
Despite our gripe, we can easily recommend this projector to anyone looking for a portable projector, a second portable display, or someone wanting to enjoy movies in bed. Just be sure to align the projector and off you go.
