After Apple’s Keynote yesterday I sat down and thought about what the new releases meant for current pro-sumer Mac users. This lead me to think: what is the difference between the base version of the Mac Pro and iMac Pro and what would a similarly configured iMac Pro cost. Also, the Mac Pro starts at $5999 USD, what computer configuration could you get with this money? Do you know what does not start at $5999, our sponsor PureVPN!:

First let’s start out with what is the base configuration of the iMac Pro and how much it costs. The base iMac Pro has a 3.2GHz 8-core Intel Xeon W with 32GB of 2666MHz ECC RAM, a Radeon Pro Vega 56 with 8GB of HBM2, 1TB SSD, Mouse and Keyboard. Of course the iMac Pro has a built-in display and this configuration comes in at $4999.
This is a full grand less than the new Mac Pro which base $5999 configuration has a 3.5GHz 8-core Intel Xeon W, 32GB of 2666MHz RAM, AMD Pro 580X with 8GB of GDDR5, 256GB SSD, and Mouse and Keyboard. We could not help but notice that the machine is spec-ed in storage, weaker GPU, and does not include a display and still $1000 more.
I set out to create a similarly speced computer on Amazon. We created a machine that costs just under $4000 without a CPU cooler. It has a Intel Xeon W-2145, 32GB 2666MHz ECC RAM, Vega 64, 256GB SSD, and a 1500W PSU. We included in the price the Apple Keyboard and Mouse as well as Thunderbolt 3 ports.
So what makes this machine so special that it could justify that price increase? Part of it can be pointed at the motherboard and MPX engineering a lot of work went into designing a motherboard with 8 PCIe slots and a MPX standard to deliver power and Thunderbolt passthrough. Despite that amazing engineering just looking at the paper specifications I cannot justify the price, maybe that will change if I get my hands on the Mac Pro later this year.
You can help me get my hands on the Mac Pro later this year so that I can write amazing articles covering my impressions and amazing benchmarks by supporting us via Patreon or changing your Amazon bookmark to one with our affiliate link. Thank you for reading and let us know in the comments what do you want us to take a deeper dive into from WWDC 2019.
