On Thursday, Apple removed the iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle from its website and online store. Apple said, "We are simplifying our iPod lineup with two models of the iPod Touch, and we are discontinuing the iPod Shuffle." Currently, the iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle are still available to purchase at Apple Store and other resellers, but may not be for much longer. In the United States, the latest iPod Nano started at $149 for 16GB of storage, and the iPod Shuffle at $49 for 2GB of storage.
Apple last updated the iPod Nano in October 2012 and the iPod Shuffle in September 2010. The iPod Touch was last updated in July 2015 with an A8 chip and an 8-megapixel rear camera.
Originally, Apple first released the iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano in 2005. Since then, there has been seven generations of the iPod Nano and only four of the iPod Shuffle. iPod sales had been declining for several years. Apple reported only 2.6 million iPods sold in the fourth quarter of 2014. iPod sales peaked in 2008, at 54.8 million compared to 14.3 million in 2014.
The iPod Touch has updated pricing as follows: 32GB - $199 and 128GB - $299. Is this the beginning of the end?, with Apple having already discontinued the iPod Classic, will they go so far as to discontinue the iPod Touch?
